Newly diagnosed 31 yrs old

Posted by Ver918 @vera918, Apr 6, 2018

Hello,

I was just recently diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus and heital hernia two days ago. I was stunned because I had never had Gerd or horrible heartburn. Since reading online I have become very anxious and scared, almost like I have been given a death sentence. I have two small children 4 and 2 that I can’t imagine leaving:( has anyone else been diagnosed in their 30s? And what can I do to stop progression. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I, too, have been diagnosed with these 2 things, and pretty much feel the same way as you. Doesn’t look like there is too much activity in this forum.

Hi Vera. I'm 38 years old. I was just diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. Waiting for biopsy results and probably have Barrett's Esophagus. Have two small children, 3 and 5. I do have symptoms, mainly abdominal pain, some acid pain and vocal fatigue. I'm scared, depressed, and can't believe this is happening to me. I tried PPI's and had twitching and spasms as side effects, so have been taking tons of Famotidine for four months.

I'm wondering how you have been managing. I'm having a really, really hard time. The pain is one thing, but I am worried about the future.

I see this isn't a very active forum but hopefully I am still able to get some responses. Has anyone been given the advice to check their stomach acid levels at all? My husband was just diagnosed with hiatal hernia and barrett's as well. I have been doing a tremendous amount of research and have come across a lot of information about LOW stomach acid versus HIGH stomach acid and that most people with GERD have low stomach acid which is made worse with PPI's. The recommendation through my research is that you should get your stomach acid levels checked because it may not be an issue of too much stomach acid but that your stomach is not producing ENOUGH stomach acid causing your food to not be properly digested etc…. I apologize if I am all over the place. Just looking for as much information as possible

This is very interesting. I was just diagnosed with BE and I have to figure out now what kind of follow up should be done because my first doctor on this is of zero help really. Didn't give me any real direction after this diagnosis, so I am going to someone else.

I really appreciate this information because the more you know, the better it is in most cases.

I have to take the PPI's for now because they are the only thing giving more relief than not and when I feel that acid going into my esophagus, it makes me really anxious.

I am also thinking of finding some alternative medicine doctor who might check for things that a regular doctor cannot. All this is just ideas in my head right now, but of course I will also seek expert care.

I have wondered if I took apple cider vinegar if it would help anything. I can't remember how it is supposed to work, though.
